A Lot of Draft Questions Remain

With the NBA draft being held this Thursday night in New York City, a lot of questions remain. The obvious question is, who are the Chicago Bulls going to choose with the #1 pick? It’s really between two guys, and it’s been between these two guys since they declared for the draft. The hometown favorite, Derrick Rose, or the safer chose of Michael Beasley?

Rose, spent one year at Memphis University, and was ever so close to bringing his team a national title. When dealing with Rose, you have to deal with his “agent”, his brother Reggie Rose. Reggie was difficult for most college coaches to handle through the recruiting process of Derrick. Don’t get us wrong, Derrick Rose is a great talent, and an excellent basketball player, but Reggie seemed to be promoting Derrick as a sure shot hall of famer. He has some work to do their. Derrick is 6’4, but only weighs 195. He will need to bulk up to survive in the Association. His high school team at Simeon Academy won the state title his senior season. He has excellent quickness, and has shown the ability to take the ball to the hoop on anyone. His downfall right now is his shooting ability, most notably, from the free throw line. He also has not shown the ability, or maybe just determination to really gear it up defensively. With the Bulls, Rose will have to play defense. Miami, he may be able to survive a little more, not working hard defensively.

The “safer” choice is  the 6’10 Forward out of Kansas State University, in Michael Beasley. Beasley is originally from Washington D.C.,  but he finished his high school ball at Notre Dame Prep School. Beasley averaged over 26 points a game for the Wildcats during his first and only season on campus. He also grabbed 12.5 rebounds per game, simply being the Wildcats Mr. Everything. Kansas State had one of their best seasons in school history behind Beasley. Michael is extremely strong, and deceptively quick. For his size, he is fantastic off the dribble, and has shown the ability to shoot the ball fairly well. His soft hands and great athleticism seem to be positive characteristics, that he will continue to rebound the ball well in the Association. The major knock on Beasley is his defensive. He has struggled to guard guys not only off the dribble, but in the post. If he struggled guarding post players in high school, just wait until he tries to defend in the NBA. Another question swarming Beasley is his motivation. A lot of experts really question if he is a highly motivated athlete or not, and does he have that winning mentality?

It is a safe beat to safe the Bulls and the Heat will have one of these two players, barring a draft day trade. Rumors have circulated, about all sorts of things. The first report was the Heat sending Dwyane Wade to the Bulls, for a cast of players, including Michael Beasley. That has since disappeared, and now the Heat have been included in other trade offers. It will be interesting to see what becomes finalized of that.

In the mean time, Minnesota, Seattle, and Memphis sit back at 3-5, and consider other top picks in the draft. A few that come to mind are Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless, USC guard O.J Mayo, Stanford forward Brook Lopez, UCLA center Kevin Love and guard Russell Westbrook, Indiana guard Eric Gordon, and Texas guard D.J. Augustin.

The wildcard in every draft is the foreign players that could be taken. The two that stick out in the 08 crop are 6’9 forward Danillo Gallinari, and 6’8 forward Nicolas Batum. Experts seem to think both of these gentleman will be drafted in the top 15, if not top 10 of the draft.

A few names that originally were going to be entered into the draft have recently pulled their names out. North Carolina, has three players coming back to play their collegiate ball in Chapel Hill. Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, and Danny Green. Among the others are AJ Abrams(Texas), Robert Dozier(Memphis), Jeremy Pargo(Gonzaga),  and Robert Vaden(UAB).

The rest of the first round will look like this, New York, LA Clippers, Milwaukee, Charlotte, New Jersey, Indiana, Sacramento, Portland, Golden State, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington, Cleveland, Denver, New Jersey, Orlando, Utah, Seattle, Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans, Memphis, Detroit, and Boston.
