Team USA Ripping Through Opponents

With five days until the 2008 Summer Olympics begin, the United States Men’s Basketball team appear to be ready to give a strong effort towards the gold medal.

After an impressive performance where the US ripped Turkey 114-82, they then blew out Lithuania on Friday, 120-84. Against Turkey the US team was led by LeBron James’ 20 points, going 8 for 9 from the field, while picking up six rebounds. Carmelo Anthony also led the charge scoring 17 points, shooting 5-6 from the field.

The US led 54-37 at halftime, but went on a 33-22 cruise in the third quarter to run away with the 36 points victory. 11 of the 12 US players scored in double figures, with Kobe Bryant the only player that did not score in double figures.  The United States made 41 field goals, and recorded 29 assists.

Friday, against Lithuania, Dwyane Wade led the team with 19 points, while Dwight Howard scored 17 in the 120-84 win. Wade, who has battled health problems the past year had this to say after the game: "I’m healthy again, as healthy as I’ve been in two years and I’m excited not only about this opportunity, but I’m excited about the rest of my career because now I know what it takes and the weight room has become my best friend.  Hard work has got me here,”

LeBron James started the game for the US with a monstrous dunk, which put them up 2-0 from the tip. Less than 3 minutes into the game, the US team was up double digits, and never looked back.

The US team now is traveling to Shanghai, where they will play Russia and Australia in pre-Olympic action. The Olympic prelims run from August 10th-18th, and the US team will face China first before battling Angola and Greece. The final US prelim game will be Germany, who recently finished third in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

If the US makes the quarterfinals, those will take place August 20th, and August 22nd, while the Gold medal and Bronze medal games will take place August 24th.
