Update: NBA Free Agent

This is the second of a multi part series on Free Agent Signings in the NBA. Since we last talked there has been some action amongst free agency.

Gilbert Arenas and James Posey are the two biggest names to make their latest signings. Let’s take a look at what has went on since we last met:

The Boston Celtics signed Patrick O’Bryant, the 7’0 center out of Bradley University. O’Bryant looks to take over for the loss of James Posey, who recently signed with New Orleans, breaking up part of the Celtics 2008 title team. O’Bryant has had a slow start to his career, playing in just 40 games in two seasons, only averaging 5:30 a game. Patrick is only averaging 1.7 points per game, and 1.3 rebounds per game. This is kind of a big risk for the Celtics if they feel he is going to be a reliable backup, and if they want to compete again.

The biggest name recently signed was Gilbert Arenas. The 6’4 guard out of Arizona signed for a six-year deal for $111 million. Last year, Arenas only played in 13 games after having knee surgery. But when healthy Gilbert is one of the elite players in the league. In 431 career games, Arenas averages 22.8 points per game, 5.5 assists per game, and 4 rebounds a game. The Wizards also signed Antawn Jamison to a long-term deal, so it appears Washington is committed to winning.

Dallas made the news recently signing a couple of players. Neither will be huge impact players, but as we all know a full roster of quality players in important in the NBA. Dallas signed forward James Singleton, out of Murray State. Singleton was not drafted, but made the team after a good summer showing. Dallas also picked up the contract of point guard Keith McLeod, who played his college ball at Bowling Green, but also was not selected in the draft. It will be interesting to see how these two players pan out for a Dallas team that has took the slide backwards lately.

We talked last week about the Bucks big signing- Andrew Bogut. The 7’0 center from Australia was recently nabbed for a five-year deal for $72.5 million. Bogut was the first pick in the 2005 draft, and had his best season in 2007-2008 scoring 14.5 points per game, and grabbing nearly 10 rebounds a game. Bogut looks to be coming into himself, and this deal will look to be cheap by the time the big man is done in Milwaukee. Recently, Milwaukee also added two new names, and signed them as well. Power Forward, 6’10, out of Villanova- Malik Allen, and 6’0 point guard out of Nebraska- Tyronn Lue also signed.

A big trade was made recently as well, and one that is a big surprising. The Denver Nuggets sent Marcus Camby to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a conditional second round pick in the 2010 draft. Seems like the Clippers gave up very little to get Camby, and the Nuggets dumped him a little early, but we are sure the Nuggets have a plan in place, and just were ready to see Camby off. The Clippers look to be a playoff contender with their offseason activity!

In the last few days, a few more signings were made, none big impact, and a few are first year rookies making their first signing. Let’s take a look at who is going where:

Orlando signs points guard Anthony Johnson.

Indiana Pacers sign Roy Hibbert, and Brandon Rush.

Golden State signs forward Anthony Randolph.

Toronto signs Roko Ukic.

Cleveland signs Daniel Gibson.

Minnesota signs Craig Smith.
