The highly anticipated return of the Golden Nugget was nothing short of spectacular. Carmelo Anthony finally adorned the baby blue and white jersey with "Nuggets" stitched in blue in the front. Carmelo Anthony was the first to arrive at the Pepsi Center working at his jumpshot in preparation to square of against the worst team in the league- the Grizzlies. During his 36-day suspension Melo made frequent visits to the arena after games to work on his game and make sure that the leagues leading scorer wouldnt be rusty once he made his return. Melo was received with a standing ovation during the introductions. He took the microphone and addressed the fans saying, "We're gonna y'all something to cheer about." And they did in their rout of the Grizzlies. The question that has been plaguing the team since the arrival of the 7 time all star Allen Iverson : Can they co-exist? They say yes.So far soo good. They both combined for 51 points . Alright now the real talk. The starting five of the Nuggets are one of the best in the league. They have Camby man who will go out and consistently give you 15 board and about 14 points when he is healthy.Did I forget to mention he is one of the leagues top shot blockers? They have Reggie Evans who is a rebounding machine and of-course Melo and AI. Both of them rocking their cornrows, tattoos and arm sleeves are the leagues most dangerous backcourt.Period.Then throw in a dynamic Guard JR Smith from the bench who will give you 20 points a night and can open up the floor with his perimeter shooting. Things are looking pretty bright till now. But thats the problem. The Nuggets are looking down the barrel of a gun and the man with the gun tells them,"You lack depth." That man is me. The Nuggets lack alot of depth. Their best player of the bench, apart from Smith, is Nene. Nene is a very good forward who does everything a forward should- rebound, score, block. But then we have to look at players like Diaware and Kleiza. These guys play alot of minutes and thats not a good thing. They arent solid players and have just entered the league recently. All the good teams have depth. Its not that they cant play ball its just that they look lost as to what their roles are on the court. Diawara cant shoot the ball to save his life but still resorts to going 0-8 from the 3 point line. The Nuggets have to add depth to their team. Another good trade that the Nuggets pulled off, though people might beg to differ, was the trade that sent Earl Boykins away for Steve Blake. Steve who? Yeah I know it doenst look like a good trade on paper, but it was just what the Nuggets needed. Boykins is shoot first point guard and thats a no-no with Anthony and AI around. The team wasnt doing to well with Boykins despite his stellar performance. The reason being : No ball movement. The ball wasnt moving around with AI and Boykins in the backcourt. On the contrary, Blake is exactly what Boykins and AI arent - A pass first guard. Now with Blake in the backcourt the ball goes to both AI and Melo. They both score. They both are happy.
