Boston Faces Cleveland Cavaliers Next

The suspense-filled match-up that is the Boston – Atlanta series is finally over. There will be no more talks about upsets, youth versus veterans, and fair-weathered fans. Finally, every one can go on with their lives as the number one team in the NBA this season, the Boston Celtics, moves on to the second round of the Playoffs after they have beaten the Atlanta Hawks, 99-65. Avoiding a collapse similar to last year’s Dallas – Golden State series, the Celtics proved to the world why they are the team to beat. It may have taken them seven games to finally eliminate the pesky Hawks but they showed true grit and power which should scare the rest of the competition.

Boston’s Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen are giving it all this season. Praised as a part of the NBA’s elite, the three players have one thing in common: they have never won the NBA Championship. Sensing that it’s now or never, they have combined their talents to become this season’s strongest ball club. Yet, many were surprised when the Atlanta Hawks forced the series to seven games. They were not expected to win three, let alone one game. But they silenced the critics and exposed the weaknesses in the Celtics’ system which will definitely be studied by their coming opponents.

Game 7 was hyped as a defining match that will showcase the best skills of all the players in both teams. However, it was all Boston from the tip. Atlanta never recovered from the offensive blows from the Big Three. Pierce led the team with 22 points while Garnett poured in 18 points and 11 rebounds. Allen only had 7 points but he was a key element in the plays designed by their coach Doc Rivers. Starting center Kendrick Perkins was a monster on the defensive end as he pulled down 10 rebounds while swatting 5 shots. He also had 10 points in 50% shooting.

The low-scoring Hawks were no-shows in their final game. Their top offensive weapon Joe Johnson managed only 16 points in the battle that meant the most. The other starters were held to single-digit scoring. Prized point guard Mike Bibby was ineffective as he only had 2 points and was limited to just three shot attempts for the whole game. The only shining player aside from Johnson was rookie Al Horford. He was able to score 8 points while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. The difference-makers from Atlanta’s Game 6 victory were overpowered by the men in green thus the lopsided victory.

Although they may have lost, Atlanta still feels good about the series. It tested their cohesion as a unit. They know that they can go toe-to-toe with any team next year. They are prepared and hungry, tasting the Playoffs again after a long drought. The Celtics meanwhile are tuning up for the next phase for their quest for an NBA Championship. They will be facing Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers next. They will be up against a much stronger team with a high-caliber All-Star player. The suspense from Atlanta will now shift to Cleveland. Garnett and company must continue giving it their all or else all their efforts will go to waste.
