Bryant Shows MVP Form in Game 2 Victory

There have been many detractors over the season but Kobe Bryant proved them wrong by becoming this year’s NBA Most Valuable Player. Now in his 12th season in the league, Kobe is a major candidate for the award for the past years but has only secured it for the 2007 – 2008 season. Many players in the NBA agree that Kobe is the best player but are quite surprised that he still hasn’t won the trophy until this year. And, to show the world why he deserves the title, Kobe has willed his Los Angeles Lakers squad to six straight victories in the postseason, sweeping the Denver Nuggets in the first round and winning two straight games against the Northwest Division champions, the Utah Jazz.

In Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals, Kobe was at it again as he scored 34 points in 11 out of 18 shooting. He was also efficient as a playmaker as he dished out 6 assists and grabbed 8 rebounds. The Lakers’ second offensive threat, Pau Gasol, was also doing damage with 20 points. Gasol also showed his defensive prowess by blocking 5 Utah shots. However, the major difference maker in the game was former Utah Jazz player Derek Fisher. He dropped 4 out of 5 three point bombs and finished with a total of 22 points. Fisher frustrated Jazz guard Deron Williams both offensively and defensively.

The Jazz is now at a slump as they again were unable to stop the Lakers from scoring at will. Their main man Carlos Boozer was held scoreless in the first half due to foul trouble. He finished the game with just 10 points. Williams was the high point man for the Jazz as he was able to put up 25 points with 10 assists. His efforts were still not enough to defeat the boys from Los Angeles as his supporting cast was not up to par with their usual game totals. The outside threat from Mehmet Okur was not falling and he only managed 1 shot out of 5 from the 3-point area. Andrei Kirilenko and Ronnie Brewer only had 14 and 12 points respectively.

Two bench players from both clubs shined most for Game 2. The Lakers had the deadly shooting of Sasha Vujacic while the Jazz utilized the raw power of Paul Millsap. Vujacic was outstanding in crucial situations, draining baskets when the Jazz were on a minor scoring run. Millsap, meanwhile, carried the team during the first half, when Boozer was sidelined to the bench. He finished the game with 17 points, a new career playoff high. He also added 10 rebounds, 6 of them offensive.

The series moves back to Utah for Games 3 and 4, where the Jazz lost only 4 times. However, one of those home losses was at the hands of Kobe and the Lakers. The stakes are high for both teams. Kobe will definitely be at his MVP form when he visits Salt Lake City. But, Williams and Boozer will be prepared to defend their turf and give it all they’ve got to win this series.
