Spurs and Hornets Will Duke It Out in Game 7

Rudy Tomjanovich said during the Houston Rockets’ title run in the mid-90s to “never underestimate the heart of a champion”. This was greatly felt by the New Orleans Hornets as they crashed and burned in Game 6 of their series with the defending NBA Champions, the San Antonio Spurs. Leading by a game, the Hornets could have sealed the deal and advanced to the Western Conference Finals but they were denied by the Spurs. They have forced a Game 7 battle wherein the better team will face Los Angeles Lakers.

The Spurs were efficient as they hosted the sixth match of this exciting Semi-Final Playoff series. The team was shooting 49% on the field and was able to make 12 free throws out of a possible 18. Tim Duncan, the former MVP, was sensational as he managed to score 20 points. He also grabbed 15 rebounds while dishing out 6 assists. He had an excellent supporting crew which was led by Manu Ginobili. The Argentinean superstar had a game-high 25 points and was deadly on the three-point area as he dropped down 6 shots out of 9. Completing their offensive powerhouse was Tony Parker. The French point guard had 15 points to complement Duncan and Ginobili.

However, 7-time NBA Champion Robert Horry made headlines once again as he leveled Hornets’ power forward David West. Horry set a nasty pick that sent West crumbling to the floor. West already had injuries in his back area and that was a cause of concern for New Orleans coach Byron Scott. The rest of the team never recovered from that blow during the third quarter as the Hornets only managed 29 points in the second half as compared with the Spurs’ 41. Horry was not called for a flagrant foul for the shocking play.

Chris Paul was still his usual stellar self as he led the Hornets in scoring with 21 points. He was 50% from the field and was held to only 3 free throws. His 3 steal, 6 rebound, 8 assist performance was not enough to beat the powerful Spurs team. Tyson Chandler, who also had injury issues similar to West, helped Paul in scoring as he netted 14 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. The Hornets 3-point threat Peja Stojakovic only managed to shoot 1 attempt from long distance as he was closely guarded by the pesky Bruce Bowen of the Spurs.

The seventh game of this series will prove to be a classic that every basketball fan should not miss. It is the battle between youth and veterans. This is the second coming of David versus Goliath. The Hornets will clearly be the favorites if they are able to send the Spurs packing and denying them a consecutive championship. Meanwhile, Duncan and the rest of the team are ready to humble these Hornets. They are ready to show their might. They are not afraid to tell Chris Paul and the whole New Orleans ball club that they have the heart of a champion.
