The Guys in Green Go for Greatness

It was the time to rise up for the Boston Celtics. This season, they have acquired two future Hall of Fame candidates in Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to support their hometown superstar Paul Pierce. The NBA Playoffs were a test on how this new look Celtics would respond to pressure. They were taken to the brink of elimination by the Atlanta Hawks during the first round of the series. Now, they have faced the phenomenal Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They were looking at another Game 7. They were again at the brink of elimination. But the Celtics were still able to finish the Cavaliers in their most crucial game to date and advance to the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.

The Game 7 battle between Boston and Cleveland was a night to remember as two of the league’s superstars went head to head to help lead their team. For the Cavaliers, it was James and Pierce for the Celtics. Both players traded baskets and hit crucial shots down the stretch. Lebron James finished the game with 45 points, an amazing achievement in its own right. However, Pierce had 41 and was successful in giving Boston a comfortable gap to win their series. The game had all the requirements for a classic: two players urging their squad to win by putting on a show that will not be long forgotten.

Lebron James’ 45 point performance was also highlighted with 5 rebounds and 6 assists. He managed to put in 14 shots, 3 of them from the three-point area. He was also efficient from the free throw line, missing only 5 shots out of a total of 19. However, he lacked the offensive support from his teammates. Only Delonte West was able to crack the double-digit margin by scoring 15 points. However, he also had 6 turnovers which were unnecessary in a big game such as this. The Cavaliers’ outside threat, Wally Szczerbiak, was held scorless for the whole game and only lasted for about 15 minutes on the floor.

The Celtics were also having offensive problems similar to the Cavaliers. The other members of the Big Three were held to just 17 points, with Garnett having 13 and Allen scoring just 4. Yet, they had a slight boost from veteran center P.J. Brown who had 10 points to go along with 6 rebounds. The Celtics young point guard, Rajon Rondo, did not feel any jitters during this crucial game as he managed to dish out 8 assists while committing only 2 turnovers. Kevin Garnett was the high rebound man for the Celtics with 13.

The stage is now set for a Detroit vs. Boston series. The winner will advance to the NBA Finals where the chance for a championship beckons. Both teams are good offensively and defensively. Each boasts of superstars that can take over the game at key situations. This will be a fun series to watch as the two teams pour out their all to win. Even Lebron James will be pleased to see Boston and Detroit slug it out – he knows it is going to be another memorable series.
