At this fifth H4L Exclusive Interview, Hoops4Life crew did a interview with Hoops4Life mix legend Mixtapelive. Q: Who inspired you and how did you first get into mixing? Q: Can you give some advice to newbies who want to start their first mixes but don't know how? When you're 1st starting DON'T rely on effects, take your time, listen and take critism, and learn from and study great mixes. - Don't rely on effects because when you're knew you think effects will make your mix look better so you just drag an effect and put it on a clip and that's it, but wrong, if you don't know how to use the effect don't use it till your familiar with it, and don't use effects for the heck of it. A mix with no effects but great editing will have a greater outcome and will acheive more than a mix with effects here and there and not used in the right way. - Take your time, and i can't say this enough times, like i said earlier when I first started i never took my time and at one point i made 5 mixes in a week. I didn't acheive anything from that no one really liked the mixes and i got no where. take your time, it will pay off in the end, editing is an art, you shouldn't rush the process. A well made mix should take days, weeks and eve months to do depending on the length. - Listen and Take Critisim: this is very important because a lot of new mixmakers think that oh people are saying bad things about my mix, and take critisim the wrong way and try to come up with excuses. But in reality your critics are the ones that help you the most, theyre poiting out what needs to be fixed and improved so that next time you'll take those things into consideration and you'll improve. How are you supposed to improve when you want people telling you that "oh good job, keep it up", how do you know what to improve then. And i know that new mixers get the most critisism thats because you're knew and your just learning ofcourse its gonna be like that. - Learn from and study great mixes, this doesnt mean copy other mixes, but study and learn from them, this way you will learn many different techniques and styles, and will further your knowledge. Q: Highlight reel or storyline? Well I love both, but I'm more of a fast paced action packed type of guy, i'd rather watch a movie with a decent storyline but lots of sick action scenes than a movie with a great storyline but not much going on. I also really like advertisement and before mixmaking i was leaning towards advertisements, and in advertisement you want to capture the people's attention and you want them to buy the product, and thats how highlight reels are, it grabs your attention, with it's fast pace, and flashiness. Don't get me wrong though, i love storylines too, and i plan to start doing more storyline mixes as time goes by, but fast paced highlight reels is just in my blood. Q: Off topic but tell us why the Lakers won't win the championship this season? Well the way theyve been playing these past few games i wouldn't bring up champtionship talks about the lakers, but once they get back to the way they were playing, then they have a great chance of winning hte championship, they've proved all their doubters wrong, they have the best player in the game Kobe Bryant, they have a deep enough bench, they've got a great record against the top teams in the west and nba, they're a major threat. But to answer your question why wont they win the championship? well if they dont, then they didn't because another team won. Q: We saw the short film that you made a while back ago for school project, does your mixing experience really help you when you do a real film shooting, or vice versa? Umm, editing wise it does a lot, because you're playing with angles and different positions , and from mixing you know what angle looks good and what not, but that particular film was done on the spot without a script or anything and with limited time, so it was a kind of rush, but the people in my class and teacher were very impressed about the editing so yea. But Film wise i still had a lot to learn, and i still do. Q: Who is your most favorite mixer, why, and how does he inspire you? Well i have a few, but the one that stands out the most is profe, the boys a genious, i think the reason why hes my favorite is because i can't do that kind of mixing, how does he come up with those ideas? The abstract looks and the stories he creates are amazing. The guy is a true artist. I'm aslo a big fan of LD2K, he was my 1st inspiration and he's a true editor, and also laker#8 just the fact that he's 15 years old and the guy makes amazing mixes he has a great future and he also inspires me in an indirect way to get better and improve day by day, because cmon what 19 year old wants a 15 year old to be better than them?
Q: Is mixmaking just a hobby/interest or something you're looking to make a career out of? It DEFINITLY is something I'm trying to make a career out of. I'm very serious about this, I make mixes for a local softball organization for their players so they can send it to colleges and the coaches there can watch it, and then if they like what they see they'll come recruit them. I also get some people asking me if I can make them a video for an event, or videos of them playing ball, biking and stuff like that, and those are all opportunities for me to get my name out there, and you never know what might happen. I also take some classes at school, last semester i took a class on After Effects which they only taught us the basics but it was something atleast, and now im taking a 3d modeling class which I hate, It's 3 hours long and boring as heck, and it's not exactly the 3d class i was expecting, but it's just the begining so im hoping it'll change. So yea, this is my main goal, to make a career out of this, and i know i got WAYS to go but I'm so determined that I won't stop till i reach it. Q: Most of your mixes are fast paced and action packed.Have you ever thought of doing mixes with a story line fo some sort like Profe,SvR and vincentda? Yes I have, once I get my planned mixes/collabos out of the way i really want to start making some Storylined and emotional mixes. I guess as of late i've been labeled and known for fast pace action mixes, with lots of effects, flashiness, and fast cuts.. which i dont disagree with, because that's what I've been doing and was aiming for, but i want to show people that i can make some quality storyline and emotional mixes too.
