At the second H4L Exclusive Interview, Hoops4Life air mish was able find some time and have some chat with one of the best cappers - Moises.

Q: So when did you first start capping?

A: I first started to cap around the beginning of October 2003, I had just build a new PC and I had planned to put in a capture device. I originally wanted it to capture some old home videos. But instead I used it to capture off the TV.

Q: Did you have any specific inspiration?

A: I wouldn't say anyone inspired me to do it. I just wanted it to capture those home videos, put them on DVD. Recording basketball games was an after thought.

Q: What lead you to recording basketball games and uploading them for other people to use or watch?

A: I just kind wanted to push my computer a little to the limit. I wanted to know if it could hold up to 3 hours of continuous capturing. So I began to cap a game here and there. I still have a couple of games from the 2003-2004 that were my test runs. I wanted to figure out a method to record them and get them on DVD. Once I figured it out, then it became a whole lot easier. I didn't plan to upload clips online. This was strictly for me, the capturing of these games. Back then, there were very few people capturing any clips. The few clips that were available were very poor in quality.
Very small resolution, very bad encoding. I wanted to change that, push the envelope.

Q: At your peak how many games do you think you capped per week, and how many hours did you put into capping?

A: At my peak, I captured every game of the season. I would say that my capturing peak was somewhere around March 2005. I would wake up at 3 am and capture programs off cable TV for an hour. Encode a bit of that until 7:30am when I captured again. Then I would put my machine to encode everything while I went to school. I would return and prepare for the Laker game . This is how it was for the month. O I would say I devoted entire days to capturing sometimes. This is how you make your computer die. And your health as well.

Q: Why do you put in so much effort for a group of people you dont really know?

A: The effort is for me. I put in the work for myself. People online reap the benefits. Which is why I don't do requests. I do put in excessive effort. Those clips are my sweat and blood. I have killed myself for years. My health those same years have been the worst of my life. Someone told me recently that it wasn't worth it killing myself over this for people I didn't know. He is right. There is no need to kill myself over this. But the effort is for me. I continue to do this because I like to do it.
Making the clips is not really difficult anyway I have it down to a science nowadays.

Q: What do people you know think about your capping?

A: The people around me, they don't think much of it. They want to know what is the need to capping so much. I ignore most of it. I just do what I want to do and don't let it bother me.
I mean, its my machine that I bought with my money. I can do whatever I want with it. So they don't bother me that much about it.

Q: Speaking of your machine ive heard you put your computers through hell and back, tell me some of your experiences?

A: Well the last computer I had, died in April in 2005. Right after that March where I sent it through hell for the whole month. The video card started dying. The power supply started dying. The NB fan died as well on my motherboard. What really broke the camels back was the death of my 120GB hard drive. I had 6 months of capturing a program completely go down the drain. Something I will never ever be able to regain again. The whole hard drive was almost filled to the max and it took my work away. That was the worst feeling in the world. I built this PC that I'm using a couple of days later after the other one died. This one hasn't faltered on me yet, even though I put this one through hell in the Summer of 2005 as well.  managed to salvage whatever worked on the dead computer and rebuilt it. That is now my main capturing computer. It is working somewhat smoothly.
I have retired this computer from capturing. I don't want to relive what happened again. It feels awful having your work disappear never to return.

Q: so how many nba games are you in possession of at the moment?

A: Not many. I would say less than 20. I guess some notable games would be the 2004 NBA Finals. Kobe's 81 point game. Kobe's 62 Point Game vs Dallas. Kobe dropping 50 on the Clippers. And Game 4, Lakers vs. Suns in the playoffs. That is the last game I have archived.I have other non-notable games as well. Most of them were from the 2003-2004 season.

Q: Do you ever think of yourself as the greatest capper to ever walk the earth?

A: No, I know someone out there does it better. But I guess as far as basketball goes. Yeah, probably. People still have alot to learn. Everyone wants to cap now but very few people are good at it. I am better than most since I had a head start and I invested a huge portion of my time to this. Now do the people think I'm the greatest capper on the earth? Well you have to ask them.

Q: have you got any little secrets that you have come upon while capping that will make it easier for others?

A: There really is no secret. Know your tools, know your craft. Even I still have alot to learn. Read, read, read. Before I began to capture I devoted whole days for months reading on different tools and hardware. Quality comparisons between codecs. Other things as well. I researched for what seemed like an eternity. You need to have desire. I didn't jump into this because I wanted recognition.

Q: Thank you for your time Moises. Is there anything else you would like to say to your fellow cappers and your fans out there?

A: Yeah, alot of people are out there gunning for me...in terms of quality that is. Some of you are not even close, but keep trying. There is no secret to what I'm doing and you can do. I don't have anything special on my PC. Hell some of you have better hardware.  But I know how to squeeze the best out of mine. You guys just have to learn to do the same. Thanks to everyone that has ever appreciated my work. I put tons of effort in and it feels good that people out there appreciate what I have done these past couple of years. To the fellow cappers...Keep capping and uploading!

We thank you the time moises spent on the interview.
