LeBron James: Overrated or Not?

LeBron James is the main man for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He, of the entire line-up of players the team has, had seemed to have single-handedly brought the Cavs into the playoffs series – the ultimate destination of every team in the league.

But looking at his performance in the playoffs, including the first two games against the Celtics, basketball fans are wondering why his regular season prowess seemed to have been on and off during the playoffs. Where is LeBron James? Is he really an overrated player? A little flashback on LeBron’s performance is needed to answer this question.

Flashback #1: Cleveland vs Wizards First Round Playoffs Game Series

Fourth seeded Cleveland Cavaliers is tasked to face off with the fifth seeded Washington Wizards. This was actually the Cleveland’s major entry into the playoffs again, after exactly 20 years of drought. The reason? LeBron James. He hauled his team throughout the regular season and into the playoffs. It was his first time in the playoff series too, since he as first drafted. If the Cavs are new to this level of competition, so was he.

However, this year was the Cavs best performance in the league in 20 years. They have finished an impressive 50-32 win-loss record allowing them to finish as the fourth seed. All credits are due to LeBron James, who if not for his determination, the rest of the Cavaliers must have been in their private vacations right now. The Cavs finished their series against the Wizard in 6 games, beating their opponent 4 to 2. LeBron James was exceptional in this series.

Flashback #2: Cleveland vs Celtics Second Round Playoffs Game Series

Now, this series is a different story. After taking care of the Wizards, the Cavs are up against the Eastern Conference’s top seed Boston Celtics. LeBron James is going to match up against Kevin Garnett in terms of shooting. The thing is, James would have to shoot against Pierce and Garnett will have to shoot against nobody. No one from the Cavs can contain Garnett yet. And Pierce, so far, is doing a great job on LeBron.

The Celtics-Cavs series is still currently running with Boston leading the series 2-1 LeBron’s stats show it all – 19% shooting from the field. On the first two games against the Celtics, LeBron shot a measly 8 out of 42, making none of the 10 three pointers he threw. That is a nightmare to any player, especially James when he has got the whole team on his shoulders. He play bad, the rest of his crew plays bad. And there’s no way around it. It’s a good thing they recovered some composure on Game 3 and handed Boston their first loss.

So, Is LeBron James Overrated?

Being a one-man crew for his team, James tends to get all the accolades. Side court analysis has no other choice but to praise him superbly because the rest of his teammates are overshadowed by his performance. The Cavs give James the ball and James throws it to the hoop, even if it is a big Hail Mary. He makes the shot, he’s the great player. He misses, he’s simply playing bad.

James is either lacking consistency or he’s not accustomed to the grueling games of the playoffs just yet. He’s a good player, but in order to be really great, he has to learn how to motivate his teammates and if possible allow them to play in the level that he does. He can’t win the series alone. A lot of people look up to James and believe he is among this league’s best players. That maybe true. But that can’t hand him the championship ring.

LeBron James deserves all the praises, as he has worked hard for his team. But that just makes him even more susceptible to criticisms if he fails to play well. LeBron is not overrated. He simply isn’t consistent.

I gotta say that he's a little overrated, but not in my mind. Cuz people are like: "Lebron is already better than Kobe and can kill his stats everyday" He ain't that good yet, but he has a lot of years left in him. I think he's around T-Mac's level. People might disagree with me here, but he's one of the most underrated players out there right now. /discuss :p
