Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett & Ray Allen

Pierce, Garnett and Allen all in Green

Two months ago after the NBA draft lottery, Celtics fans were in shock. After years of mishaps and bad luck, 2007 was supposed to be the year of the Oden or Durant. But when they were handed the fifth pick, it seemed that the Celtics were cursed.

Then GM Danny Ainge traded that pick to receive Ray Allen and emotions changed to confusion sprinkled with intrigue. What about the youth movement? What about developing all this young talent into a contender down the road? The acquisition of Allen alone threw the Celtics into mediocrity for at least the next three seasons.

Fast-forward to the first week of August, and Ainge is looking like a genius, the fans are anxiously awaiting the 2008 season, and the Boston Celtics are arguably the favorites in the Eastern Conference.

While the Celtics only have eight roster players to date, three of them are named Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and the aforementioned Allen. That is enough to make them a legitimate contender in the lackluster east.

Yes, there is the reality that after the big three the roster consists of unsigned rookies and unproven veterans. But there is also the reality that the lethal trio of Pierce, Allen and Garnett is arguably the most intimidating the league has seen in the last 25 years.

Their conference foes also augment the fact the Celtics can play for an NBA title. Detroit seems to be losing its grip on the stranglehold it has had the last five years, Cleveland is certainly venerable in that it relies too heavily on Lebron James, Chicago is too young and Miami is too old.

Critics of the move suggest that you can’t win a title with three all-stars surrounded by bench players, but with only five players on the court at once, basketball is different from football and baseball—depth is less of an issue.

That’s right folks, it’s like 1986 all over again in New England. The Red Sox have the best record in baseball, the Patriots are thinking Super Bowl, and Celtics have made major off-season moves, with Green 17 the mantra for the upcoming season.
