Game 1, Lebron James passes up a high percentage lay-up deferring to an open Donyell Marshall in the corner who missed the game winning three. Media outlets ridiculed the young superstar, essentially saying he isn’t ready to make the next step in the NBA, subsequently awarding the series to Detroit after only 48 minutes of play.
Fast-forward to the conclusion of Game 5 and we may be able to officially say that the Lebron James Era has begun.
In dramatic fashion, James confirmed to everyone in attendance and watching on television that he has developed the ability to be cold-blooded, and in due time will be the face of the NBA.
As Head Coach Mike Brown sat Lebron for the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, many questioned the motives behind the decision.
James was just filling his tank.
He scored 29 of the last 30 points for his Cavaliers team, which really don’t even need names on their jerseys they are essentially minions to the King. He hit from outside, and attacked the basket against a Pistons defense that was severely passive on the interior.
While I was not ready to give King James the throne at the start of this game despite his gusty performance in Cleveland, or even at the start of the fourth quarter, it's hard not to believe this guy can carry his team past the aging Pistons after the high shock value he provided last night in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Next year will be his 5th season, and we can call him a veteran in the league—at the age of 22. It’s extremely apparent he has all the intangibles to become one of the most successful and marketable players this side of Michael Jordan. And there is no doubt in my mind that when James leaves the game of basketball, he will do it with multiple championships and individual accolades to his credit.
As for the present, the league needs James & Co. to advance, which would thankfully prevent a rematch of the 2005 finals. Detroit—seen’em; San Antonio—sick of em. Cleveland is now a team the casual fan can root for, and be awe struck as this budding superstar begins to etch his name in post-season basketball lore.
