To continue in the article on ball handling, passing is another extremely vital element in the game of Basketball. While not really considered with “ball handling”, you are handling the ball when you begin your pass. Without being able to pass the basketball, your other skills will simply not lead you to the success you are hoping for when playing this great game. The old adage is said: “ Pass the Basketball more, and dribble less”, I like to tell my players that same saying, as it is much more effective to pass the basketball, then it is to try and dribble the basketball to the spot you want it, every time. Let’s take a look at how to become an effective passer. |

One of the most underrated aspects of becoming a good basketball player is the skill of ball handling. Many people do not understand the importance of taking care of the basketball. You do not have to be a guard to be a good ball handler. You also do not have to be John Stockton, Magic Johnson, or DeRon Williams to be a good ball handler. |

If you are a youth coach, a high school coach, collegiate coach, or even professional coach, one thing I would bet you preach to your kids is “Defense wins Championships”. All basketball players can play defense, no matter how skilled, or quick they are. If you are the quickest kid on the block, you should be able to get all up in the offensive player and cause havoc for him or her. If you are very fleet of foot, a few things you can do is give the offensive player some room, and simply just keep him or her in front of you, and put your hands up for all shots. Again, it does not take Michael Jordan to be able to play defense. |
