Opening Night Preview

We are so close.

We've almost done it. It was tough, but together we got there.

It wasn't all bad, some days were good, hell the Olympics were great! But other than that...

But that's gone now, and we don't have to worry about it for a long time.

The NBA season is almost here. Opening Night is almost upon us.

Not a second too soon.

Second Best Options in the West

Everyone knows Kobe Bryant is going to take (and make) the most shots for the Lakers. It's the same for LeBron James, for Tim Duncan, for the lesser stars like Micheal Redd and Joe Johnson.

They are the primary options, the main guys, the spearhead of the attack.

But we already know all about them right?

So instead, Overtime is going to take a look at the second guy. If the poster boy gets double teamed, who's the ball going to? Who provides that steady stream of consistency and steps up when the big guys take a rest? Who may go unnoticed until they're suddenly not there?

I'm going to try and identify that second guy on all thirty teams, both for the season just gone and the upcoming one, then at the end I will choose my top five from the group.

Have I got it right for your team? Let me know what you think and your top 5.

This will be coming in two articles, one for each conference, so let's start with the East...

Jermaine O'Neal: A New Start

Four years ago, a very nasty incident happened. It began with Ron Artest fouling Ben Wallace, and after that things became esculated and well, you know the rest. Things changed in many many ways on that day, some were bigger ways, some were more obvious than others.

One way, was the change in direction of Jermaine O'Neal's career. The Pacers were never a contender again, resulting in the remnants of a team that they are now. Jermaine's body began to break up, and he missed long strecthes of several seasons. The critics whispered that, with not much of a team to return to, Jermaine wasn't putting full effort into either his comeback or his time on the court.

Not so quick first step

You may have all seen the recent news that new rookies, Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies and Mario Chalmers of the Miami Heat, were sent home from the rookie camp for being caught smoking weed and having ahem 'guests' of the female persuasion. As you might have guessed, both of these are against the rules of the camp.

This news was really disappointing to me.

I'm not going to start lecturing on the evils of weed and women (though one is much worse than the other), we are all grown-ups and I doubt my ranting on this article would change anyones mind. And Darrell and Mario both (I hope) know what they did wrong.

Pat Riley

Last Friday, seven greats of the game were inducted into the Basketball Hall Of Fame.

Now, ok, the hall has lost a lot of respect in the years gone by due to the questionable decisions made by its shrouded committee, but that is another issue, one that will not be discussed today. Whatever the hall's faults, they should not be transferred to the inductees; past, present or future, it is still a tremendous honour and one of the best things that can happen to a baller.

And it is none too soon for some of them.

The What If’s of the Decade

It's the summer. Things are slow for us hoopheads.

Free-agent signings have come and gone. The summer leagues are over.

Which means now is the time to imagine what could be...or what could have been.

We will never know what would have happened to the league if a certain player had inked a certain contract, or a GM had said yes to a certain deal. Everything could be different!

So here are some of the biggest 'what if' situations of this millennium, ranked in no particular order, with what almost happened, what would have occurred if it had gone down, and some kind of verdict on whether this is a good thing or not.
