Not so quick first step

You may have all seen the recent news that new rookies, Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies and Mario Chalmers of the Miami Heat, were sent home from the rookie camp for being caught smoking weed and having ahem 'guests' of the female persuasion. As you might have guessed, both of these are against the rules of the camp.

This news was really disappointing to me.

I'm not going to start lecturing on the evils of weed and women (though one is much worse than the other), we are all grown-ups and I doubt my ranting on this article would change anyones mind. And Darrell and Mario both (I hope) know what they did wrong.

But still, this hurt me. I have always loved the Kansas Jayhawks, and this past season was brilliant and dominant. The team style play of the team is truely the best brand of basketball that exists, and the Jayhawks used it to perfection.

I can remember the title game perfectly, I even remember the score of the Wii tennis game me and my friends indulged in before watching the game. (I lost) and I remember literally falling onto the floor as Mario hit THAT shot.

These two have really good chances of being big in the NBA. Despite the quizzical drop in the draft, both have landed in fairly good situations.

Fair enough, they play for last year's two worst teams, but they do have a genuine oppotunity.

Darrell Arthur landed in Memphis, and lucky for him he isn't a guard, meaning he is almost certain to log good minutes. He has the kind of game that could work in Memphis, and fills an almost empty spot for the Grizzlies. If the management actually realise they have an NBA team to work with, get their act together and generally at least look like they're trying to win, in a few years Darrell could be an essential piece of the team.

Mario is even luckier. He is a point guard that has Dwayne Wade and Micheal Beasley to work with... how hard could it be? But seriously, after making almost every team regret passing on him with his spectacular play through the summer league, Mario has a very realistic chance of being a starter on the Heat on a team that should be on its way to redemption.

Or, at least, they did have those chances.

Of course I'm not suggesting that this instance is going to forecast their entire NBA careers, but its still not a good way to start. Now every time they get on a court, that story is going to be right there with them, until they manage to do something to replace it. Something to do with basketball I hope.

Already, they have been fined 20,000 dollars. To the pair, who just happened to come by rather large sums of money recently, 20k probably doesn't seem entirely too bad. But i don't care who you are, you don't just throw 20k around.

They have also managed to incure the wrath of David Stern, which is also not a particurly good idea. There is also talk that Stern may be able to suspend the two for being thrown out of the rookie camp.

These two are two of my favourite players from college ball over the last few years, and I want that to be transferred into the NBA. They have just become professional basketball players, I implore them to not throw it all away.

Get back in the headlines guys, for your game not your extra-curricular activities.

I agree with you, and it had to happen alongside the Josh Howard thing as well but it is sad that two young men didn't have the sense to realise the consequences. Don't get me wrong I'm no angel but these guys go to seminars and talks about the pitfalls of fame and life in the NBA (ironically at the rookie camp!)

To be honest, Im a little surprised that this didnt get brushed under the rug! Maybe Mr. Stern is a little skitish about scandals as may be seen in another great article on the site about the What if moments.

I heard the guys may have been covering up for Michael Beasly. Any truth to that rumor?

Keep up the good work guys, not long now before the season STARTS!!!!

Thanks Edward, as for the Micheal Beasley rumour, strangely it seems that Michael was not thrown out of the camp, yet ended up being fined 50k by the league, though no official reason was given?
