Avery Johnson Gets the Boot!

In a classic situation of a coach getting the blame for the players lack of intensity and ability to knock out a lesser opponent (well, the Hornets were better), Avery Johnson has gotten the boot from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and now will be looking to coach elsewhere.

Personally, Avery Johnson tends to get on my nerves. He is a good NBA coach and he was a solid point guard for the San Antonio Spurs, so don’t get me wrong, but that voice just is like scratches on a blackboard to me. Not knockin’ his coaching ability, like I said, but for some reason, he has always been a little annoying in my opinion.

Anyways, with all my pet peeves out of the way, I think Avery Johnson was put in a crappy situation. He has done an awesome job as the head coach of the Mavericks; in fact I heard a stat about his coaching career the other day that kind of puts it all into perspective. Avery Johnson won 150 games faster than any other coach in NBA history! Yeah, I am talking about any other coach like Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, Pat Riley, you name it, Avery Johnson has done it quicker than anyone.

With that being said, now think about how ridiculous it was to fire him a day after he was knocked out of the playoffs. I know the guy won’t have too much trouble getting another job with coaching vacancies (Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, others sure to follow) all over the NBA right now, but you have to think he got the bad end of the deal in Dallas.

Not the most appealing coaching positions available with the Bulls and the dreaded Knicks jobs being the most high profile spots available, but if there is someone that could turn around franchises that are in disarray, I would say its Avery Johnson (since Larry Brown signed with the Bobcats).

With the recent speculation of the Phoenix Suns coach Mike D’Antoni being on his way out after their first round pounding by the San Antonio Spurs the rumor is that he will be the next coach of the Chicago Bulls and if that happens Johnson will most likely be the next New York Knicks coach where he will have his hands full trying to clean up Isiah Thomas’ mess that he left behind. I think this will be a good place for him as he may be able to relate with this generation of players better than Thomas could.

Even though Johnson did have the most successful career in the playoffs with the Dallas Mavericks I can almost guarantee that he will do well with another franchise in the near future and Mark Cuban will be fuming when Avery comes back into Dallas and kicks the crap out of the Mavericks.

All and all, Avery Johnson getting the boot was for the best because much like George Steinbrenner with the New York Yankees and Al Davis with the Oakland Raiders, Mark Cuban is the kind of owner who has too much control over his franchise to the point that he will never win a championship unless he lets the coaching staff start making decisions, but hey, you live and you learn.
