Do the Detroit Pistons Still Have the Right Stuff?

Through the first week of the NBA playoffs it looked like almost all the playoff series in both the East and West were turning out to be pretty predictable in their outcomes except for one, the Detroit Pistons getting thumped by the Philadelphia 76ers twice and the Philly actually looking like a good team.

Personally, I would have bet everything I own on the Detroit Pistons taking this series, I would have even bet on a 4-0 sweep of the Sixers, but thank God I didn’t bet penny on this series as the 76ers look like a motivated team trying to pull another Golden State Warriors type upset.

Although Detroit rebounded in game 4 (barely) to get the come from behind victory, I still believe that the Iguodala and company could do the impossible and beat the #2 seed Pistons to make improbable move to round 2.

As long as these young guys like Samuel Dalembert, Willie Green, Reggie Evans, Thaddeus Young and the 76ers veteran leader Andre Miller keep playing solid team basketball and the impressive team defense that they have displayed against the Detroit’s vets, I don’t see the Pistons stopping them.

I still can’t believe I am saying this, I had to actually look up these guys to see if I spelled their names correctly that is how unknown and insignificant these role players have been (at least in my opinion) in the regular season or just since they got drafted. No one has written anything about these guys who have finally gotten on the map in this series. Very reminiscent of Golden State’s playoff run last season, no one knew who Monte Ellis was or Matt Barnes and their bench players, in fact now that I look at it, if the 76ers win this series I think it will be a bigger upset than the Warriors taking down the Mavericks last year.

Other than Iguodala or Miller, I would have no idea who was on the 76ers this season, they have been terrible for so long (even when they had AI) that I have had absolutely no interest in this team that seemed like the Pittsburgh Pirates of the NBA, a predictable loser every year with no hope for a winning season.

One thing that has definitely contributed to the Sixers unlikely playoff run has been how old the Pistons have looked in this series. Usually the Pistons come in, play some lock down defense and force the opponents to make really stupid mistakes, but now, Detroit just seems to be the team making these silly mistakes and see their chemistry disappearing.

It is hard say that there is a better starting five in the NBA then what the Pistons put on the floor every night. You got Chauncey Billups leading the way, taking the clutch shots and getting his teammates involved. Then there is Rip Hamilton who is probably the best in the NBA in playing without the basketball, coming off screens and popping, always takes smart shots and plays gritty defense. Can’t forget about Tayshawn Prince and Rasheed Wallace who are the most unrated players in the league, both of these guys can play lockdown defense and score at will either inside or outside. Lastly there is Antonio McDyess who if he didn’t get injured early in his career could have been a legitimate Hall of Famer with superb post skills and decent jumper and can get you a double-double on any given night.

These 5 guys are the reason why the Detroit Pistons are in the Eastern Conference finals every single year (5 years in a row). So either the sun is starting to set in Detroit and the Pistons are finally showing their age or the 76ers are just more motivated and a sick and tired of being the laughing stock of the Eastern Conference. Whatever the reason, the rest of this series promises to be an all out battle and worth watching.
