Kobe Bryant Wins MVP

Every era in NBA basketball has had players that literally define the meaning of basketball excellence and perfection from the beginning of professional basketball with the late great George Mikan of the Minneapolis Lakers who won the MVP in 1953 and dominated the NBA winning 5 NBA titles in a row in the late 40s to the early 50s to Wilt Chamberlain who completely changed the face of NBA basketball and the way the game was played and still holds the record for most points in a game with 100. Not only did Wilt the Stilt change the game he also dominated the league much like Mikan did winning two NBA championships and four MVP awards in his career.

As the game progressed players in the NBA just got more talented and athletically gifted making MVP races tighter and tighter every single season with players like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson all playing at the top of their game and showing NBA fans moves, passing and scoring flare that have never been seen before.

With all these phenomenal players inspiring the new generation of basketball players the new era has seen some of the best all around players of all time like Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, LeBron James and this year’s NBA MVP Kobe Bryant.

This NBA season has showcased some unbelievable basketball with the Western Conference being the most competitive conference ever with huge trades like Shaq going to the Suns, Jason Kidd heading back to Dallas and Pau Gasol making the Lakers a super power in the West once again. Not only did these trades change the face of the NBA, but there were two players in particular that made their respective teams some of the NBA’s best and those two players are Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant.

It is becoming more and more apparent that we are witnessing the emergence of the new “best point guard in the NBA” in New Orleans Hornets Chris Paul who seems to get better with every game. Paul is blessed with the ability to score at will (25-30+ ppg) and get his teammates involved (10-15 apg) with precision passing. Many people believe that Chris Paul was this year’s MVP because he has completely turned around the New Orleans Hornets by being atop the Western Conference throughout the season; Hornets coach Bryon Scott winning the NBA Coach of the Year and turning teammates like David West and Tyson Chandler into primetime players in the NBA.

Chris Paul is extremely talented and you could make a good argument that he is this year’s MVP, but it is hard to argue that Kobe Bryant, who is arguably the best player in the NBA, is without a doubt this season’s NBA MVP.

Coming into the 07-08 NBA season, Kobe Bryant’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers was very much in the air with constant trade talks, bad blood between Bryant and the Lakers front office, then something amazing happen, Kobe stopped talking and focused on playing basketball for the Lakers. It became apparent very early in the season that the Lakers were a completely different team with one asset that they haven’t had in a long time, team chemistry, which was in big part to the emergence of Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant getting all of his teammates involved.

The Lakers, lead by Kobe, seemed like a team on a mission that was sick and tired of losing. Then something devastating happen, Andrew Bynum went down with a season ending knee injury. Spirits were down and a faith in a Lakers playoff run went slowing down the tubes, that is, until Mitch Kupchak made the trade of the century getting rid of Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol.

Although most big time trades that go down take time for the team to get some good team chemistry, but Kobe and Pau clicked immediately. With the addition of Pau, Kobe and company were damn near unstoppable, tearing up the league with reckless abandon and as a result, Kobe Bryant started playing his best basketball ever. Getting his teammates involved and giving them confidence, no trade rumors, no bad blood just wins and a seemingly golden path to the NBA finals.

So I say, if Kobe Bryant ever deserved the MVP, it was this season and I see an NBA title just around the corner!
